sketchwalk at siglap

Siglap

Siglap Road Sketchwalk & BBQ
I wasn't particularly pleased with the composition of this which featured a straight frontal view. The tonal values aren't contrasting enough. The result is quite flat.

Siglap Road Sketchwalk & BBQ
Sketching a sloping road is difficult.

Sketching at Siglap

It was a fruitful trip to Siglap area on the 25 Feb 2012 for this month's sketch walk, and we got to spend more time hanging out with the fellow sketchers while drawing around East Coast Road, and also later at Mdm Tia's BBQ party.

Here are my two sketches done at the old housing blocks at East Coast Road.

While sketching the above, a resident of that Blk 1, who also works at the clinic at the next block, came over to chit chat, and she told me these old flats would be gone in three years time and the residents moved en-bloc to Chai Chee estate...

Sketching A Piece Of SIGLAPore :)

I joined Tia and my other sketching kakis at Siglap. I tried to do a "demographics profile" of its inhabitants. So, I positioned myself at the bus stop. The objective of this particular exercise was to draw them fast and well enough before they can board their respective buses. The buses were in fact, arriving and leaving with the precision and regularity of a Singapore-made Swiss watch I have missed quite a number of very interesting subjects on the account of this. But anyway, here's my recent offering for the day:

Railway Station from Blair Road

The other day I drove by this place and took a quick glance out from the car's window. All I could see is a huge grass patch void of any human activity. The zinc roofed buildings are gone, the rails and the posts have been taken away. Its another piece of empty land awaiting for a condo or a shopping mall to be built on, or maybe a residential area. Who knows. Or they could preserve the land to turn it into a park. There are some talks about it but I don't have good feelings about these discussions.

Sketching Toa Payoh

Dragon Playground at Blk28 Toa Payoh
Dragon Playground at Blk28 Toa Payoh
1 of the last 3 remaining dragon playgrounds left in Singapore. You can find this playground at Block28 Lorong 6. This playground must be at least 35years old now. It is wonderful to see it again. I even had a good at the slides. Newer gadgety playgrounds have replaced such simple and elegant play space. Such fond memory of trying to play 'make-believe' at these playgrounds. I hope they will keep this playground for as long as possible.

Sketching at Lebuh Armenian with the Penang Sketchers (15 January 2012)

In January, I made a trip to Penang (my second time, after that sketching trip there last year), and managed to join the Urban Sketchers Penang group to draw around Armenian Street (Lebuh Armenian) in George Town.

Here's a video I made that day while sketching:

This was filmed in HD quality using an iPhone 4 and edited with its iMovie application. Added some royalty-free music by Jason Shaw.

Hope you'll enjoy it!

And here are my two sketches during this particular session...

On the left is the Penang Islamic Museum (formerly the residence of Syed Mohd Alatas, an Achehnese merchant of Arab descent who led the Acheen Street Mosque community during the Penang riots in 1867), and on the right is the residence of Narelle, the friendly owner of China House and a string of art galleries in Penang.

More photos and videos of this sketching trip to come! :)

Cheers,
Edric
