Up!

View of Temasek Poly main gate 6 floors above. We rarely have a chance to use the open walkway joining lobby d and c but when we do, the scenario is totally breathtaking. Almost an hour sketch to visualized the feeling.

Although I like to use Lamy fountain pen for my sketches, I also like to try new pen. This sketch at Singapore River was done with the new gel pen. On the right is the Fullenton Hotel and on the left is the Anderson Bridge.

then General Post Office, now Fullerton Hotel

In line with Woon Lam's Singapore River theme, here is a piece on the old General Post Office I did as a demo to a group of design students during a field trip. I did this in about 2 mins. I said to the students "it doesn't matter whether the number of openings or columns is correct, what matter is the mood and feeling of the place". R.I.P. GPO.

Old National Library

Does this look familiar to you? This is a sketch of the old national library at Stamford Road that was demolished a few years ago. GONE and disappear but my sketch survives. R.I.P.

our popular canteen

Designer Pad - canteen at Temasek Design School where creative juices flow. This canteen is very crowded during lunch time simply because it has a few good food stalls such as the Muslim food stall and the western food stall. The drink stall also serves very good coffee and curry puffs. Yummy!

east coast park

I was inspired by the tranquility and athmosphere of east coast park on one sunny wednesday afternoon.
This sketch was a product of a couple of kopi from komalas.
Location: Komalas restaurant, open space facing the beach park.
Inspiration: afternoon heat by the beach.
Thanks Tia for inviting me to be part of USk-Singapore.

Places of interest

Hello everyone! It's great to be able to post my observations here! :) Looking forward to seeing everyone's work. Above is St Andrew's Cathedral at City Hall. I brought my students there to draw this morning.
This is the Asian Civilization's Museum at Empress Place. Brought my students to draw there yesterday evening.
Sir Stamford Raffles' sculpture from the side. I sat in the shade as I drew this. Would have picked a frontal view of him if it hadn't been so hot. :) It's been nice going out in the sun to draw.

museum night festival

Last Friday, the facade of the National Museum of Singapore was transformed into colourful canvas with spectacular light insllation. The windmill sculptural frame located at the main entrance of the museum carried at least three performers displaying acrobatic dance moves responding gracefully to sound and music. The performance was dazzling and spectacular culminate with a fantastic pyrotechnics show by Action Theatre PAN.OPTIKUM from Germany.

This interior sketch was done sitting outside the museum cafe before the 10.30pm night show. The crowd at the far end was the location for Donna Ong's installation work entitled "The Crytal City" which was one of my favourite displays for the event.

Again, the brown colour floor was the left-over coffee from my drink.

Welcome to USk Singapore

Architect and educator Tia Boon Sim, who has been a correspondent for USk since December 2008, will be spearheading this Singapore blog. Tia is a gifted artist and passionate advocate for location drawing as a way to capture the world around us. I can't wait to see the incredible body of work that she and fellow sketchers in Singapore will put together in this blog.

Congratulations and happy sketching Singapore!
