June Sketchwalk at Singapore River

We are heading to the National Gallery on 24th June (Sat). USkSG will be collaborating with the Gallery for their Wellness Festival 2023.

If you’d like to join a short 30min tour by NGS, meet at the main entrance (St Andrew’s Cathedral side) at 9:20am to sign-up for the tour.

Each tour is limited to 20pax per session. The Gallery will be distributing goodie bags to sketchers at the 9:30am briefing. Limited availability while stocks last.

There will be group tours. The first at 9:30am and subsequent tours from 10:30am. The Gallery will be exploring a few paintings revolving around the Singapore River.

Timeline for the day:

9.20am: All to meet at the Entrance of the National Gallery (Coleman Street, St Andrew’s Cathedral side, near Gallery Souvenir Shop)

9:30am: Tour for Group 1 begins
10:00am: Tour ends for group 1, Group 1 heads to Sir Stamford Raffles Statue to sketch

12:15pm: Those already sketching, start packing your things and make your way for Show & Tell

*Only pencil sketching is allowed inside NGS. No other wet or dry media are allowed. Note that location of Short briefing and
Show and Tell are subjected to change, depending on the weather for the day. If it rains, we will head to Level 6 for the sketching instead.

Instructions for the day:

1. Make your way to the location, be aware of surroundings, and maintain necessary distancing.
2. Challenge yourself to explore hidden corners that hasn't been seen/drawn yet; this will also help prevent too many of us crowding the same perching points.
3. Post your sketches, snapshots and videos online — 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐡𝐚𝐬𝐡𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐬 #𝐮𝐬𝐤𝐬𝐠 #gallerywellnessfestival #gwf2023 & @nationalgallerysingapore — so everyone can easily find the day's artistic output.

Sketchwalk at Asian Civilisation Museum (Jan 2019)

Last month's sketchwalk is in collaboration with National Arts Council, Filmat36 and Urban Sketchers Singapore.

Singapore River beside Elgin Bridge

The National Heritage Board of Singapore has just recently released a new Heritage Trail for Singapore River. A Heritage Trail has markers (signboards) along the route to highlight the historical memory of the place. It's difficult to imagine how life was like back then when we look at the current urban landscape. The best thing about the route is you can learn interesting things about the places, such as how people use the place in the past.

Yesterday, I went walking along parts of the Singapore River Trail and stopped beside Elgin Bridge for the sketch.

Elgin Bridge stands on the site of the first bridge that was built across the Singapore River in 1819. Other former bridges on this location include the 1823 Jackson Bridge and Thomson Bridge from 1844. The bridge was continually upgraded to cope with rising traffic levels. The original Elgin Bridge, completed in 1862, was named after Lord Elgin, Viceroy of India. The present structure was built in 1929.

Singapore River View

Having done the view of Boat Quay as seen from the Museum of Asian Civilizations, I switched sides and drew the Museum and the Fullerton Hotel from a nice terrace over three Sunday afternoons and a few pints.

A Diffused Sir Stamford Raffles

Sketched this last month while waiting for my Eggs Benedict sandwich at a Cafe along the Singapore River.

This was done during lunch time under the indoor comfort of Dome, my favourite lunch place whenever I go to Singapore River for a field trip with the students. The coffee stain was on the postcard size watercolour paper already. Taking advantage of the coffee stain, I put the Supreme Court Building aka the flying saucer and the Victoria Concert Hall next to each other although they were at quite a distance apart with each other.

At today's field trip, I was so inspired by students' enthusiasm that I completed two pieces of watercolour pieces on location to illustrate different techniques and tools. This piece was with coffee stains, salts and watercolours. The other piece was on Botero's big bird and you can see the piece here.

Elgin Bridge at Singapore River

It was a productive day for me. I completed two watercolours in the morning during the field trip to Singapore River and a sketch of the cafe interior at night when I visited the exhibition on "The Dead Sea Scrolls" at the Arts House. This was done in my sketchbook which is small enough for me to apply colours directly without any outlines. You can see the other bigger watercolour piece on Botero's big bird at Urbansketchers.

Although I like to use Lamy fountain pen for my sketches, I also like to try new pen. This sketch at Singapore River was done with the new gel pen. On the right is the Fullenton Hotel and on the left is the Anderson Bridge.

In line with Woon Lam's Singapore River theme, here is a piece on the old General Post Office I did as a demo to a group of design students during a field trip. I did this in about 2 mins. I said to the students "it doesn't matter whether the number of openings or columns is correct, what matter is the mood and feeling of the place". R.I.P. GPO.
