October Sketchwalk - Duxton Road

The official sketchwalk in October was around the Duxton Hill area. It was my first time there and I found many interesting things to sketch. I managed 3 sketches before joining other sketches at the URA center for "show and tell".

MacPherson Area

The weather was hot and humid. I did another sketch at Thai Thong Crescent, MacPherson area while sitting in my car with the air-conditioning comfort. It was difficult as the cars were moving in and out of the parking lots all the time. Although there was a van blocking my view as I was about half way into the sketch, I managed to complete it with the composition that I wanted.

Pagoda Street

Selegie Road after JYOF

JYOF means Journey of Youth Olympic Flame. My 15-year old son was one of the torch bearers for the first Youth Olympic Games on the sixth and final day of the journey of the flame last Friday. I went downtown in the early evening at Selegie Road, one of the JYOF locations trying to witness his run but he was to start running at about 100m away from where I was standing. His schoolmates and passers-by were all cheering, screaming and trying to run with the torch bearers when they appeared. I could not run with them so when the crowd disappeared, I went to the nearby cafe to wait for my son's school bag to be delivered by his school's teacher. My son and the other torch bearers went to Marina Bay's floating platform to witness the lighting of the cauldron by MM Lee.

I did this sketch at the cafe called 'tcc' while waiting. I was at second level of POMO, a shopping centre looking at the junction of Selegie Road and Prinsep Street.

Jago Close for Lunch

Back to Jago Close again - with a vengeance. We ordered half a (steamed) chicken just for 2 of us - my wife and myself. Then I suddenly remembered what Drew said to me once, "Don, why do I have a feeling that you are always eating?" I beg to differ. I am not always eating but I blogged about my meals a lot, both on Bloggers and Facebook. Singaporeans barely stop eating and everywhere we go, there is always a coffee shop somewhere. It would always be filled with people munching on something; it is either Mee Pok or Cha Kuey Teow!! Eating is a pass time here!! And it is a blessing to eat too!

Jago Close

Jago Close is very near to where I live - just about 5-10 mins away if I drive. It is not a place of significance or importance but for food hoppers like us, it is a must come, just for the sake of its stir fried carrot cakes (rice flour), "black"; or "white";. Black means rice flour stir fried in dark swert soya sauce, white means stir fried with egg.

Upper Changi Road and Siglap Connector

Before I live here, I have never imagined how this place may look like. When the entire island of Singapore clamors for upgrading and building taller high-rises, places such as this has retained its original state for many years. I am really amazed by some of the buildings here that have not given way to condos and shopping mall. Spiral stairwells and jaded windows that reveals their eras and how long they have been around. So after lunch today I decided to linger a little longer to sketch the back of one building, which looks more like one that could only be found in steam punk comics. This is gonna be fun. I should be exploring the surrounding areas in the near future.
