Congratulation to another successful sketchwalk experience in Geylang. So sorry I back out last minute. Wasn't feeling up to it, or maybe you could say I was "lazy". Well, I actually wanted to spend more personal time with my wife for the weekend so decided to go shopping with her eventually. Anyway here's a sketch I did after lunch with James.

All sketches were done at Toa Payoh Lorong 4.

Miel's night sketches

Miel, sent me his night sketches and said "here're my sketches from last night :) couldn't produce more because the place is just blurry with so much illicit activity! couldn't help but, ahem, ogle the "wrong" way! hahahahaha! Anyway, the food was good, talk was good, company was good --overall, a wonderful evening :)looking forward to our next one!"

Evening Sketchwalk @ Geylang, Singapore

This is our very first night sketchwalk and we chose Geylang, our very own red light district. Much like King's Cross in London & Sydney. The sketching proved to be very challenging especially with the limited amount of light. Traffic was high and people everywhere. We had fun observing the men prowling the back alleys and the sex workers busy at work looking for their next potential customer.

This is another durian stall along the streets of Geylang. We had 1 very sweet durian at the end of the night.

We went to check out a smaller lane in the red light district. Here I was almost sketching blind because the sodium street lamp gave a very dim orange glow all around. Besides knowing the colours in my watercolour box and the rest was really guess work. It did not turn out badly when I walked back into the bright lights. Many men were walking around us wondering what we were doing in the dark. I had a street cat for company while sketching this too.

I travelled often by bus and train and I use this opportunity to practise

portrait sketching. It can be quite quite nerve wrecking at times. This may happen when the bus jerks to a stop, or the passenger you are sketching alights when you are half way through or other boarding passengers blocks the view. It is quite a relief when I can finish a sketch without mishaps.

April Holiday in Hong Kong

I took off last weekend for a quick getaway in Hong Kong before school term starts this week.

View from the long escalator that connects SOHO to Mid-Levels. It was lunch time so you can see many hungry workers queuing for a quick meal.















This escalator is one of the longest, measuring almost 800m. Many tourists like to ride the escalator all the way up to mid-levels and start walking down.

Took a break after hours of shopping with my wife. Coffee stain and digital screen tone make a nice pair.

Night Sketchwalk this Saturday!

The upcoming sketchwalk will cover the colourful geylang stretch where there are durian stalls and many busy eateries. We will meet at Kallang MRT station at 6pm and start walking off at 6pm sharp. Then we will move on down the road toward Aljunied MRT station. At 7pm, we will break for dinner at a coffeeshop with good food (you may also find your own food depending on your preferences.) Then we will continue the sketchwalk as a NIGHT sketchwalk. For sketching at night, there will be more dark areas interspersed with colourful bright areas, so do bring black markers or inkbrushes that can colour black spaces fast. We will conclude our sketchwalk at 9pm at Aljunied MRT station. Please call 91070735 if you can’t find us on that day. No need to sign up, just show up on that day.

ps: It is adviseable for female sketchers to dress with longer pants and less revealing shirts to avoid being scanned by uncles:) But we will stay away from the sleazy areas nonetheless.

Sunday Outing @ Galleries

I decided to change my Sunday routine and just go and look at art. Sketched the lobby of the Lim Hak Tai gallery at NAFA whilst waiting for it to open, to view an exhibition of ceramic works by the late Ng Eng Teng.

I am overcome by nostalgia re looking at his art. I sketched some of his works at the bottom of the drawing, but these were from another of his exhibition at the NUS Cultural Centre, which I visited later in the day All in, I visited 5 art exhibitions last Sunday, and returned home - spirits nourished and uplifted.

Eating and posting, sketching and posting...

There are many times when I just feel kind of lazy to post because I have been enjoying posts by you guys. But nevertheless I need to join in the fun more. Here's a few eating sketches again!!

And another observation while having coffee at a neighborhood coffeeshop at Toa Payoh - a foreign worker planting grass to make Singapore look greener!

Roast Duck stall @ Sims Drive Market

Last sunday, I sat next to this food stall that sells chicken/duck/roast pork. The colours of his banner, lanterns, pails and meat made the messiness of this stall very intriguing so hence the sketch.

Sometimes there is no need to eavesdrop... people these days talked so loudly you know how much they are earning and how many times they crap everyday. It is really hard not to listen to interesting gossip. I bet these ladies here were having a swell time talking behind their husbands and how the latter don't help around in the house all the time.

Last Saturday evening, I went to the neighbourhood Starbucks with my son. He was studying and I was sketching. The place was packed with young people with laptops and earpieces hung around their necks. Two guys in a group occasionally spoke so loud that you know they were boasting about their investments. I was sitting at the far end near to the corner wall having the best view of the entire cafe.
