Speed sketching before they left at one of my favourite dinner places; the corner of Joo Chiat Place and Still Road. Although I have sketched at the same place before on the bottom right, I have not been sketching much lately on Muji Sketchbook.

March 2013 sketchwalk

Hi all, sketchwalk this saturday March 30th, will be at Gillman Barracks. This is a former military camp which has been converted into a place for art galleries and eateries. I've not been there myself, but sketchers who have been there recommend it.

The closest MRT station is Labrador Park (Circle Line Station CC27.) From there, it is just a short walk up along Alexandra Rd to the Gillman Barracks at 9 Lock Rd. A clearer direction and map can be found here: http://www.gillmanbarracks.com/visit.php

We will gather at Gillman Barracks (9 Lock Rd) at 930am to start our sketchwalk. So please have your breakfast before coming. Sketchwalk will be free and easy so you can draw whatever catches your interest there, be it buildings or bugs. At 12.30pm, please return back to the start point (9 Lock Rd) where we will gather, look at everyone's drawings and take photo!

Everyone in Singapore is invited. And if this is your first time, we encourage you to travel light as you may have to do some walking. Bring a hat in case it gets hot. Bring a foldable stool if it will make you feel more comfortable. All drawing levels are welcome so don't be shy. You are also free to use any drawing tools and technique you wish. In fact, this is a good time to try techniques and art tools you've never tried before because it is all just for fun!

The place is relatively easy to find and it will be easy to spot the sketchers. But if you are seriously lost, you may call 91070735. (But please call only if you are seriously lost or else I will have to keep answering my phone will I'm sketching. Thanks!) See you all there!

PS: There is a giveaway contest for this sketchwalk here : http://www.urbansketchers-singapore.blogspot.sg/2013/03/giveaway-contest-for-gillman-barracks.html

Pearl of The Orient - Balik Pulau

Balik Pulau (literally meaning back of the island) is a town in Penang, Malaysia. It takes about a 75min bus ride to get there from Georgetown. Durians and other kinds of fruits are planted there. The area was affected by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.  – Wikipedia

Taal Lake
We had a day out sketching at Taal Highlands. This is my sketch of Taal Lake and Tagaytay from the highest point of Tagaytay. This is where President Marcos' half finished Palace in the Sky was built. It was meant as a guesthouse for the visiting US Preident Ronald Regan. It became People's Park in the Sky after the People Power Revolution which toppled the govt of President Marcos in 1986.

RSS Intrepid at VivoCity

The Singapore Navy was docking the frigate RSS Intrepid at VivoCity for the last two days. It was for some awareness program and they were inviting the public the board the warship. Tickets were free but were given out by late morning. If you did not make it on board, you can try at the upcoming Navy Open House on 18 and 19 May 2013 at the Changi Naval Base.

RSS Intrepid
That's the RSS Intrepid at VivoCity. There have been quite a few interesting ships that have docked here. I've been on the Gotheberg and Logos Hope, just to name two.

RSS Intrepid Officers bunk
This is the officers' bunk. This particular room is fitted with three beds. There's a toilet which they call Heads and a wardrobe. Specialist bunks are larger but there are more beds and there's no shower room.

This was the last sketch I drew. I couldn't draw the Sikorsky S70B Seahawk Naval Helicopter because it was drizzling. When I checked the time, it was 4 hours later. Time flies when you're sketching.

Pearl of the Orient - Food

Pearl of the Orient - Food
(This series is taken from my recent adventure in Penang.)

One thing I love about Georgetown is the variety of food.  Street vendors litter the roads with their mobile carts serving some of the best local delights from noodles to dessert to fruit juice. Not only does the food taste so good, the cost puts every traveller's mind at ease. Here are some of my favourite haunts.

Pearl of the Orient

This next series of my travel sketches were done in Penang, Malaysia. Only an hour away from my hometown, Singapore, it's a great place to get away.  What I love most about Penang is its heritage.  Especially how painstakingly Georgetown preserves its buildings down to the very last detail is immensely intriguing.  ENJOY!
