wayang sketch

100924_Wayang

Last Friday, I visited another Wayang with a few photographer friends. They took a lot of nice photos of me. Thank you Dan, Carol, Yi Chao, Dr Teh and Shiang Hoong. The photos above were taken by Carol.

Wayang, is a Malay term often referred to Chinese opera troupe. I visited one during the Chinese Hungry Ghost Month and I did a quick black and white sketch on the backstage. This time, it was a different troupe performing for the heavenly god on a temporary stage inside a temple compound opposite block 153 at Serangoon North Avenue 1.

I did a watercolour piece in front of the stage. There were less than twenty people in the audience and they were all senior citizens. I went to the backstage later to show the performers my sketch and again I was worried I might be intruding into their private space. I met and took a photo with Stacy Ong, one of the youngest members of the troupe. She told me she has a day job and is still supporting the family at night by performing in different roles on stage. It must be very tiring for her and I wish her the best of health and happiness.

End of the road for...

I was at Mohd Sultan Road with a friend last week when this property agent handed me a flyer on a soon-to-be-launched apartment project. Where is the location, I asked. He pointed to the row of shophouses in front. What? End of the road for yet some old buildings? Sad day indeed. Whether these buildings have any heritage or historical significance they are old charming pieces of art to me. Some developer is gonna re-develop the 3 or 4 stacks of terrace shophouses at the junction of River Valley/Mohd Sultan Road into a 7-storey mixed development of apartments and commercial shophouses. This is where Yong Bak Kut Teh and some other eateries are now.
Now you see em and soon you won't. So I went back there again last Sunday to capture the buildings in my sketch journal before they are history. :(

I managed to do only 4 sketches and left early for an appointment. Something different sketching industrial area and it was also my first attempt sketching people. A fun morning for me though I have to leave early.

Eunos Sketches

Eunos sketchwalk - Altar for a monkey god

Eunos Sketchwalk result - A refuse collection company

Eunos sketchwalk - great idea to sketch at an industrial park that is to be relocated soon. Good thing the place was more or less deserted since it was a weekend. But still, we have to be careful because the forklifts were very active. I managed to sketch only 2 pieces that day - but the whole experience was fun. I hope the rest of the sketchers enjoyed the day too. I did not stay for lunch with the rest. Later that day I continued on to Marina Barage just to chill with some friends. I managed to sketch 2 pieces there. Here's one.

Marina Barage

I love the open space at Marina Barage - will definitely go there again to see the exhibits and the gallery - of course when the weather is good. What a great weekend!

eunos drawings

Was experimenting with coloured pencils, ink and ballpoint (all together). I made some of them too heavy as you can see. But I liked the textures.

Result of Sketchwalk at Eunos

First location when we met at the food centre after a cup of good coffee. The lorries and vans were constantly coming in and out of the carpark lots. Now you see it and now you don't so it was a challenge sketching the vehicles. The little red shrine was what Shyam called it "god's postbox" and there were many of them in different forms and shapes. I guess you need them there to protect the workers from mishaps and accidents in a industrial estate.

Second location, I was sitting next to a huge pile of rubbish sketching this. I was attracted to the forklift parked next to the bicycle and an uncle drove it away before I could finish it. So I added more curve lines on the road at the bottom left that was the original location for the wheels of the forklift. Colours added on the spot.

Ink and watercolours, 250mm x 250mm.

Third location, I found a forklift to sketch! So as four other sketchers. It was the same forklift that was parked at the second location. As I was about to colour the sketch, it started to drizzle so I added the colours later.

Ink and watercolours, 250mm x 250mm.

All the shops seemed to own a forklift and it's dim in almost all of the shops

SKETCHWALK

Join us, Urbansketchers and OIC, for our next sketchwalk happening this saturday morning. The location this time will be the Eunos Industrial Estate, located just beside the Singapore Post Centre. This area is rich with workshops specialising in metal works, timber, furniture, automobile repair and spray painting, all lined up one after the other. There will be much to draw. Please take extreme caution: Choose safe spots to sketch and always keep a lookout for forklifts and trucks in this busy area.

Directions: Get down at Paya Lebar Stn. Follow the dotted lines to the food center marked out in red. Meet at the food center at 9.30am. From there we may spread out in all directions, covering the estate at our own leisure. We will return back to the same food center by 12.30pm. The building marked out in pink is rather interesting too if you have time to explore it.

For more information, contact Tia at 96968080 and Andrew at 91070735. See you there!

Buffalo Road, Tekka

One of those shops where I get all stuff Indian such as vege, spices, herbs etc when I cook my Indian dishes. Well, you can buy all these at stalls in heartland markets though but here the atmosphere is thrown in for free.
