OYO - First contact

Hello everyone. This is my first contribution to this very rich blog and mazing community that I had the pleasure to meet last saturday. Thanks Tia for letting me in. I hope to see you all soon for another sketchwalk. So I manage this little sketch of a very busy backstreet not far from the windmill. I sat on top of garbage container the whole session ( the things you gotta do to get the best view of your subject :)

Now, this mosque would make a wonderful project for architects and students. I can imagine the challenge - the site is awkward, and who would have seen a mosque surrounded by carparks?

I thought this was a rather nice corner with the sloping road. It was a good session and there was no shortage of styles - from the very graphic to the very illustrative.

Different techniques at Holland Village Sketchwalk

Sorry Andrew, next time I will be more careful with the hair.

Holland Village in Watercolour

I decided to paint a half-sheet watercolour en plein air this time, and used a little masking fluids on the windmill, lamp posts and the lettering on some of the signs.  A few sketchers were curious about the technique so I shared with them what it does and how it is done.

I'm prretty happy with the colourful result although the hot weather was getting unbearable towards the end of the session.

Holland Village's Wind Mill

The weather only permitted to do just one satisfying sketch that day, after which it was too hot for me to continue properly as I was so very distracted from wiping my perspirations from time to time. However I did enjoyed seeing so many sketchers that day. As I wrote on my FB post, I was exhilarated to see them so focused and so committed to sketch, besides exchanging friendly small talks about their days and even about art materials and tools.

Anyway for this piece I used my newly bought charcoal pencils on pastel paper. The background was by a white pastel stick.

SKETCHWALK HOLLAND VILLAGE this saturday

Join us for our upcoming sketchwalk this saturday at Holland Village. Please see map for directions as it will be a short walk to get there. Drop at Bouna Vista MRT station, cross the overhead bridge, and follow the red path in the map. Holland Village is located within the blue area. We will meet at the holland village hawker centre at 9.30am. And then take our time sketching around the area till 12.30pm, when we will meet back at the hawker centre.
Points of interest:
1. holland village's cafes/restaurants. (don't forget the back lanes behind the cafes)
2. the famous magazine stand opposite crystal jade.
3. Chip Bee garden's nice white semi-d houses. (marked with a pink circle)
4. Behind the carpark (on your way there) is the bouna vista swimming pool. It is old and charming. and may be torn down soon. (marked with a green circle)
5. old mosque near the car park.

For food, there is the holland village fried beehood at the hawker centre (if open), provence bakery for good curry buns, cheese balls and toasted sandwiches, daily scoop homemade icecream, and da paolo gastronomy for gelato and heated lasagna/pizza.

note: that the holland village mrt station is NOT open yet.
note: there is a big Artfriend open at bouna vista MRT station (just below) if you want to get any sketching supplies.

Please call Tia at 96968080 or Andrew 91070735 if you can't find us.

Win a watercolour sketch box and sketchbook

The contest is over. The winner of the watercolour box is coldkohmew and for the Venice Sketchbook is why. I'll bring the items to the Holland Village sketchwalk. Please find me there - I should be wearing a black Spiderman 3 cap.

I've two things to give out at the sketchwalk end of this month, wherever the place.

They are a Winsor & Newton Cotman WaterColours Sketchers' Pocket Box and Venice Sketchbook (in French text) as draw by Fabrice Moireau

Winsor & Newton Cotman WaterColours Sketchers' Pocket Box

Winsor & Newton Cotman WaterColours Sketchers' Pocket Box
This watercolour set is actually a review set. I have used it a bit, nothing much. So it won't come with the packaging and wrappers as seen in the picture above.

Venice Sketchbook

Some page previews from the book.

Only those who are going to the coming sketchbook are eligible for this lucky draw.

If you want them, just post a comment below on which one you want. I'll pick a random winner for each.

Wind Tunnel at iFly Singapore

I was covering a story on iFly Singapore and this was a sketch I made.

at Udders

110515_udders
Weather was too hot and humid so a visit to Udders ice cream was a very good idea on a Sunday afternoon. Testing the paper for Books Actually, a local bookstore. It could not take the coffee splashes well but the end result was still acceptable.

Result of Sketchwalk at Redhill

We went to Redhill, the heartland for the April sketchwalk. We had new comers and more lady sketchers this round. I did 3 sketches of different sizes for this morning sketchwalk at Redhill. I arrived very late at around 10.15am due to the heavy rain in the morning. After my breakfast at this coffee shop, I started with the top piece in smaller size to warm up. Elderly folks were everywhere! It reminded me of my childhood at Queenstown. 21 x 15cm, ink & watercolours.

The second piece on the upgraded old flats including block 21 was done in about 30 to 45 mins just in time to rush back to the food center to meet other sketchers at 12.30pm. These are upgraded older flats in Redhill. The architectural style of these flats in the old days was primarily of art-deco features and proportions similar to those found in Tiong Bahru charaterised by its curved balconies and window projections. The semi-curved parapet wall facade could be added later in my view and I think the facade is redundant and very artificial. 40 x 20 cm. Ink & watercolours.

Third piece was done after the session ended at the hawker center. People moved very fast from the tables. A stall was closed on a busy Saturday which was unusual. 26 x 13 cm. Ink on Muji sketchbook.

Worldwide Sketch Crawl Day 2011 (Penang)

In April 2011, I travelled to Penang to join the local sketchers for the Worldwide Sketch Crawl Day, held in conjunction with the anniversary event of the Penang State Museum.

Joining me on this non-stop sketching trip were Eve Tan and Ho Wai Hong (Singapore) and Rinna Clanuwat (Bangkok), and we were very well looked after by the Penang Sketchers - they were simply amazing and we had an truly awesome and memorable time in their care.

Here's a video I took of the sketch crawl event, with special thanks to Eve for helping with the editing process. Hope you will enjoy it.

Cheers!
Edric
