Bishan Park and Sturdee Road

I recycled the used parking coupons to sketch at yesterday Bishan Sketch Walk. Masking taped at the back of 10 coupons to form an accordion sketch sheet 200mm X 850mm. Sketched on the revised of the used coupons with Hero 578 and Lamy Safari pens, Calli Blue for line work and Calli Brown mixed with Calli Blue for wash.

The completed sketch is 200mm X 850mm

An exhibition Of Pop Up Art was help at 31 Sturdee Road. I sketched this at the open space in front of the gallery. Jane Walker, the gallery owner requested us to make an Ad Hoc sketch of the exterior building of these shop houses. Sketch with fountain pens and Calli Blue Ink on Derwent Sketchbook 180mm X 440mm ( open 180mm X 880mm )

No 31 Sturdee Road is 2nd shop from left.

Bishan Ang Mo Kio Park

Pilot Techpoint V7
This was drawn from the carpark in front of the library. I like the flats at Bishan with their tilted roofs.

Sketches from the sketchwalk at Bishan today

Sailor Pro Gear fine nib with Lamy black ink + gouache and watercolour. The filbert brush I used today holds less water and creates a more pastey effect when I paint with it. And I do like that effect. It's easier to control the paint. My pen ink wasn't waterproof. But then I didn't use that much water so it didn't bleed much.

Hunt 102 in an Ackerman pump pen + watercolour.

This might be one of the nicest parks in Singapore that I've been to. Hunt 102 in an Ackerman pump pen with Pelikan Brilliant Black (semi-waterproof ink) + watercolour. I love how thin the lines go for the hunt 102. Catches a little on my bumpy paper. But a delight to draw with.

APRIL SKETCHWALK

Here is the plan for this saturday's sketchwalk:

At 9.30AM, We will meet outside the Toastbox at Junction 8 (just outside the Bishan MRT station).
We will draw around the Bishan central area. You can draw the Junction 8 shopping mall, the bus interchange there and the Bishan library with its cubby holes.

At 1030AM, let's start to fan out in the general direction of Bishan Park (See map below). Feel free to form your own small groups and form your own trails through the neighbourhood. You are encouraged to spread out and not cluster together so much. If not, everyone will be drawing the same thing. Explore freely.

From 1030 - 1230PM, take your time to explore and sketch Bishan Park which has been renovated. See the site here: Bishan Park.

At 1230AM sharp, let's meet outside the McDonald's at Bishan Park, circled in the map. We will find an open space there to view all our sketches there and end the sketchwalk.

This is just a recommended time plan. If you'd like to head to Bishan Park earlier because you are tired of drawing HDB flats, please go ahead.

If there happens to be a thunderstorm on that day, we will stick to drawing around junction 8 and the areas around.

If you are in Singapore, your are invited to join us. No joining fee or attendance. Just bring your drawing tools, paper and show up. Travel light.

If you get lost, please call 91070735. But please only call if you are seriously lost so that I won't need to keep answering my phone when I'm sketching. We will not be deviating from this mapped out route. So if you are late, please find us along this route. Thanks!:)

My first try of Calli Blue Ink by Daler  Rowney. I love the brilliant hue of this ink, I use directly and also dilute to Wash.  Most of my sketches are done with 3 pens - Hero 578, Lamy Safari and 1 fountain pen from 555 State Express Co. I have received a lot of Likes and Compliments in my FB from viewers at home and aboard. Please enjoy as I have enjoyed sketching with this Blue Calli Ink.

This morning the sketchers were sketching at Tiong Bahru on the invitation of National Heritage Board to take part in the Tiong Bahru Heritage Trail. I did two sketches with my like-minded fellow sketchers, interviewed by the media, talked to Ms Indranee Rajah, the Member of Parliament, also Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Law and Ministry of Education. What a day!

Tiong Bahru (14 April 2013)
It's a place we've been to many time to sketch. Unfortunately, today it was rather cloudy and we could get any good light and shadow going on.

These are the two sketches drawn from the front of Tiong Bahru market. The Urban Sketchers group was split in several smaller groups at various location to sketch.

Tiong Bahru Heritage Trail Launch event 14th April

We are very privileged to be invited by National Heritage Board to assist in launching the Tiong Bahru Heritage trail. Using our sketches, we will demostrate our very unique way of recording and interacting with heritage and culture.

Ms Indranee Thurai Rajah, Ministry for Law and Ministry of Education, Member of Parliament for Tanjong Pagar GRC will be the guest of honor. She will launch the event and even watch us sketch on-location.

Bring a friend along and we hope to see you this Sunday at Tiong Bahru with your sketching materials.

Ink & Watercolour Wash on S&B Delta Sketchbook

The following drawings are done on Stillman & Birn
Delta Series Sketchbook 254mm X 178mm ( 10" X 7" )
The Orchard Road series drawings were done in the morning between 8:30 AM and 9 AM before my morning shift work. This is the best time to sketch in Orchard Road as the crowd have not come in. The morning is cooler and less humid.

Inside the Subordinate Court

These are two unused sketches drawn from inside Courtroom #1 at the Subordinate Court. As photography is not allowed in the courtroom, that's where artists come in. I was drawing from the media section of the room.
